How Can A Psychiatrist Help?

Many patients ask, “Is a psychiatrist a doctor?” Psychiatrists are medical doctors specializing in mental health. They understand both physical and mental health and can help discover why patients are experiencing physical and emotional symptoms. They can then offer the proper diagnosis and effective treatment. Nurse practitioners and psychiatrists can:

  • Assess, diagnose, and treat children, adolescents, and adults with mental health conditions
  • Help prevent, identify, and manage symptoms from psychiatric disorders
  • Prescribe effective psychiatric medications
  • Administer gene testing to assess your genes and help your clinician make smarter, more personalized treatment decisions
  • Work with patients suffering from depression, anxiety, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and other mental health issues
  • Consider both mental and physical symptoms
  • Make treatment recommendations

Our experienced psychiatrist can help you understand your symptoms, make a diagnosis, and recommend treatment options. He will also help you understand the reason for his treatment recommendations, including how it works, possible side effects, and potential risks.

Our Psychiatry Services

The Psychiatric services provided by Dakota Family Services include:

Psychiatric Evaluation and Diagnosis:

A general psychiatric evaluation is performed by our psychiatrist or nurse practitioner. This evaluation aims to determine if you have a mental illness. The clinician will obtain the necessary information by asking specific questions you may answer orally or in writing. They will review your medical history and may order lab tests.  The evaluation may also involve meetings with family members. This assessment provides a diagnosis and individualized treatment plan that meets your goals.

Medication Management:

Psychiatric medications can stabilize your condition and improve symptoms enough for therapy to be effective. Our clinicians use a variety of factors to ensure you receive the right medication to improve your life, including psychiatric evaluation, ongoing assessment, and in some cases GeneSight testing.

How Can Dakota Family Services Help?

Our team can help determine if medication is a promising option for treating your mental illness. If medication is right for you, we will find the right medication and dosage to help you lead a happier, more productive life. We will continue to monitor your medication’s effectiveness and make adjustments until we see the best results.

Telehealth (Online Therapy)

Telehealth allows our team to use interactive audio, video, or other telecommunications technology so you have access to psychiatric services online from anywhere. It includes the use of electronic media for consultation relating to your mental health diagnosis or treatment; allowing us to interact in real-time when you need us. Teletherapy gives you access to mental health care without the need to travel, find childcare, or take time off work.

Psychiatry Process

Dakota Family Services’ clinicians have a holistic approach to health; taking into account emotional and physical symptoms when making recommendations.  We don’t prescribe medication before doing a thorough assessment, believing it is a decision that should be taken seriously. Our professionals work with you so you can understand your options and make an informed decision. We respect your decisions and offer alternatives that will be of the most benefit to you. The psychiatry process follows six steps:

Step 1: Call for more information and to find out how we can best serve you.

Step 2: If you choose to continue, we will send paperwork for you to complete and return.

Step 3: Schedule an appointment.

Step 4: With your permission, we will text appointment reminders.

Step 5: At your first appointment, we will work with you to determine your goals, build a relationship, and work together to create an individualized treatment plan.

Step 6: Visit with the psychiatrist/nurse practitioner about additional appointments and schedule as appropriate. In some cases, the psychiatrist/nurse practitioner will set up the appointments. In other cases, our receptionist will contact you after your appointment.
